Oz Whistles

WORKSHOP

 Special buletin:

The systems of Oz Whistles suffered a massive crash in February.

This put our email and order systems offline for over 3 weeks.

Since this crash required a total re-build of our website and email systems, we are still encountering glitches which are being fixed as we encounter them.

We apologise for the disruption. But rest-assured, the making of whistles was not stopped - only slowed.

We thank you for your support and patience in this challenge.

I am taking limited new requests for the Oz Whistles Vambrace whistle.

Inquiries are welcome.

For the month of January 2019, I am offering discounted deals for pre-paid builds. This effort is intended to fund a project to offer more keys and models. Please contact me direct for more information about this offer (mitch@ozwhistles.com).

The build-request book is opened for gidgee and Delrin(acetal resin). Blackwood and cocobolo are now listed as endangered. It is best I don't contribute to that.  I will look for suitable replacement species and update my offering accordingly. If you have a specific kind of wood you would like me to work, I am open to suggestions via the contact page. I will be making my own explorations which will appear as "off-book" offerings below.

Waiting times will be 3 months, more or less, as stocks of wood become ready to become whistles - that is up to supply and the wood itself. (Please inquire through the REQUEST BUILD button if shown)

For odd keys such as B-natural and C-sharp, please inquire through the CONTACT US page.

UNCLAIMED and OFF-BOOK WHISTLES become available from time to time as shown below (please enquire through the ORDER NOW button if shown)

(Note, Local import duties may apply for international orders)

Of interest: Here is a recent clip showing the Vambrace whistle as performed by Ciaran Clifford of the excellent band "Aizle"

  • Oz Whistles - Whistle Crates

Simple box felt-padded with magnetic closure

    Whistle Crate

I got sick of whistle-bags so I created the whistle-crate.

These are a simple whistle-box, felt-padded and magnetic closure.

They provide a far better protection for the whistle .. and are a great fiddle-toy .. no hinge and no catch .. a lot of fun really.

At the moment, there's only sizes to suit C, D and Eb (maximum width 17mm).

Other sizes may be requested via the contacts page.

    AUD$35.00

Please note that all prices shown on this website are in Australian dollars (AUD). At the time of this writing, 1 AUD is equal to about 60 US cents(USD), 56 British pence(GBP), and 62 Euro cents (EUR). THese rates change all the time and I advise you to check before committing an order. For USD, A good "rule of thumb" is to calculate the price at 2/3 of AUD prices here for a rough estimate of your local currency - but is always best to check first. My favourite exchange website is XE.com - there are others. If you pay by paypal, it will calculate a spot exchange-rate when you select AUD as the currency - payment services such as paypal also add a risk-spread to cover volatility, so it will be a little more. These things are complex, but I hope this helps?

  • Oz Whistles - Visor D

    Visor tunable whistle in D

    Visor_D

The hand-made VISOR model whistle is a similar design to the Vambrace.

With no need for metal ferules to bind wood margins, it delivers the signature quality of the Vambrace at significantly less cost.

Acetal resin has its own sound charcteristic and the VISOR will be well placed in your collection.

Being impervious to water and the elements, it is well suited to all playing conditions and climates with little need for maintenance.

The basic VISOR model is made only in D with bronze mouthpiece. Custom configurations may be requested via our email contact info@ozwhistles.com. Custom options may include brass or silver mouthpiece and other keys.

  • Oz Whistles - Cocus-Silver-D-Vambrace-X251 (SOLD)

Cocus D with silver trim (SOLD)

    CocusSilverX251

True West Indies cocus is an extinct species of wood. It is rare that I have a chance to work with it.

West Indies Cocus is the absolute best wood for woodwinds. It does not warp nor crack with the extreme humidity conditions within a wet-woodwind such as a flute or whistle. It nearly always presents a good voice.

This piece is the result of a customer collaberation to obtain a log of this rare wood to make a whistle. The log produced only 2 D whistles. One went to the customer, and this one is offered above and beyond expectation.

The wood was very expensive - but the price only reflects the cost of wood.

In all other respects, this is a standard Vambrace D whistle.

It plays well and I am proud to offer it to the playing community.

The price includes shipping and carry-case.

Woods

For build requests in wood, I offer only Desert Gidgee.

This wood is suitable for wet-woodwinds and in sufficient supply.

Cocobolo and African blackwood have entered the endangered listings on the CITES report. As such I can not export them. I am in search of alternatives. Delrin is a good replacement for blackwood, but has a slightly different sound

The woods I use are sourced ethicaly, and I am confident that whistles will never be a threat to any species.

I use other woods as they become available and if they are suitable for whistles. Such examples are usually offered "off book" for players to select in-person.

Metals

The hand cast metal fittings can be either brass, phosphor-bronze or special-white-silver (Which is more pure than Sterling and patinates to a white rather than a grey). These metals are normally chosen by color-match to the wood, For instance black and neutral toned woods are matched to silver, yellow or purple tones are matched to brass and red tones matched to bronze. I am not using brass so much now - it does not age as well as bronze.

Waiting time:

I don't make many of these whistles - each is individually crafted and build time can vary. No Vambrace whistle leaves the workshop without passing high quality standards. Current waiting time is approximately 2-3 months from build request to completion. This estimate is based on a calculation that assumes that the work will proceed uninterrupted, but can be impacted by unforeseen events.

The Initial estimate will be given with each build request. It is not a promised deadline.

I do not alert delays, but I am more than happy to reply to status requests. Work is progressed on each confirmed build request on the book until the whistle is finished or the build request is cancelled. Upon completion I will contact you to arrange payment and postage.

Delivery deadlines such as birthdays, Christmas or gigs are rarely achievable. Please consider this before placing your build request. Delivery expectations have been known to produce tensions. I would prefer to be just producing whistles.

Price (All prices shown on this site are in Australian dollars AUD:

(NOTE: Standard prices are offered in good faith at the time of build-request. This assumes no radical currency or metals inflation between quote and completion. If inflation deviates more than 5% in that time, the price will be subject to renegotiation.

Further note: Suitable tonewoods are becoming increasingly rare and expensive. This is reflected in the standard prices outlined below.)

Standard Vambrace Soprano whistles using bronze or brass are $550.

Standard Vambrace Soprano whistles using special-white silver trim are $600.

Standard Visor Soprano whistles using bronze are $400

Non standard materials or configurations may cost extra - quote given on inquiry.

Unclaimed builds may be offered from time to time with reserve prices set on a case-by-case basis.

Postage & Handling:

The whistles are shipped in strong mailing tubes with internal bubble-wrapping. To date, no breakages have occurred.

Postage rates can change and will be calculated at the time of sending.

Insurance can be requested. Losses in transit are at the receiver's risk. Without insurance I cannot make up any loss.

Please be aware that many countries charge import taxes and duties. This differs from country to country.

Postage Prices at July 2014 are:

Airmail/registered air mail. $35 for all destinations.

Other methods can be requested with quote given on inquiry.

Payment:

Unless I am runnign a fund-raiser, I rarely take deposits. The price is agreed with each build request and will be billed upon completion with payment received before dispatch. The agreed price can span a period of 12 months or more - offering the price before completion is a goodwill gesture on my part. Unfortunately, I cannot control currency inflation - if inflation exceeds 5% I may be forced to adjust the price to match the inflated value at time of payment. If such events occur, I apologize for this necessity in advance, and ask your understanding.

I do not haggle.

I do not do trade deals for services or goods.

Payment can be made in Australian dollars only.

Methods of payment are:

* For international deliveries payment can be taken via PayPal. International Wire Transfer (TT) can also be arranged, but usually incurs more transaction cost.

* For Orders within Australia, methods are Paypal and direct transfer (Details provided on request).

Special Note:

An order for these whistles is treated as a build request. The request places no obligation on either party. The price is set with the build request and will carry through to completion regardless of any subsequent pricing. Upon completion I will contact the requester to ask if they wish to claim the completed build. Once again, there is no obligation to take them up. Changes to the build request prior to completion will cause the build to be delayed. If several whistles are included in the build then there is no obligation to claim them all. Unclaimed whistles will be offered to the next requester on the list. No finished whistle will be held at the convenience of the requester. A new whistle left un-played for too long does not play-in correctly. If the requester needs additional time to pay, the completed whistle is offered to the next requester and the request is moved to the next convenient build. The build request can be cancelled by either party at any time up to the point that I accept payment. With cancellations, no reason is asked and none given. The build of my whistles is conducted in the spirit of goodwill. My work is dedicated to providing instruments worthy of the players to the best of my ability. Any breach of goodwill will usually result in cancellation.
